Between 1975 to 1978 in Pol Pot reign, about 1 and 2.5 million Cambodians perished, some killed outright, others dying from disease, malnutrition and mistreatment at this Choeung Ek (Killing field). Nowadays, more than 8000 skulls, arranged by sex and age, are visible behind the clear glass panels of the Memorial Stupa, which was erected in 1988.

Leave Phnom Penh at 08:00am. We travel about 15km toward southwest of Phnom Penh we will arrive at Choeung Ek. The memorial at Choeung Ek just outside Phnom Penh was an orchard! And a Chinese cemetery prior to 1975. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it became one of the killing fields the site of the brutal executions of more than 17,000 individuals, most of whom first suffered through torture and deprivation in Toul Sleng Prison. Choeung Ek is now a group of mass graves and a memorial stupa containing thousands of skulls.
